Top debutant best market for record-breaker Spieth at British Open
Published:Jordan Spieth’s victory in the John Deere Classic made him just the fourth teenage PGA Tour winner of all time and the youngest in 82 years. Now he is bidding to enter the record books again at the Open Championship.
Tiger Woods remains the youngest post-war major champion when running away with the 1997 Masters aged 21 years and 100 days, with Spieth not 20 until the end of July.
It is 150/1 that Spieth eclipses Woods with a victory on his first Open Championship start and his success at TPC Deere Run was certainly no fluke.
Spieth has now posted top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour this season on six occasions, which is something that the likes of Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson and Ben Hogan failed to achieve even once between them.
Expecting Spieth to triumph at Muirfield may be asking for a bit too much and he still has further chances to become the youngest post-war major winner, as his John Deere victory additionally earned him entries into this year’s PGA Championship and the 2014 Masters.
However, there are some Open Championship betting options where he can make a mark, notably the 11/1 that he is the top debutant.
He does bring some major pedigree to Muifield having been the leading amateur when tied 21st at last year’s US Open and his main competition in the top debutant market would seemingly come from Billy Horschel and Hideki Matsuyama.
Horschel led the US Open after two rounds this year before eventually finishing in a share of fourth, while Matsuyama’s potential is highlighted by the fact that he will play the first round at Muirfield alongside Mickelson and Rory McIlroy.
Alternative markets where it may pay to side with Spieth include the 12/1 that he adds to his top-10 count for the season.
