England to complete Ashes thrashing with victory at the Oval

Published:

England’s wins might have been tighter than expected, but the home team arrive at the Oval 3-0 ahead of Australia, and keen to make another statement ahead of the return series Down Under.

With Alastair Cook, Kevin Pietersen and Graeme Swann all enjoying fine records at the ground, England should be backed at 1/1 to round off a 4-0 series win.

Cook has not had his best series with the bat, but boasts an average of 47.46 from 13 innings at the Oval, with two hundreds and three 50s to his name. The England captain can be backed to be his side’s top scorer in the first innings at 4/1.

Pietersen has an even better record than Cook, averaging 60.38 with four Test hundreds, the most recent of which came against India in 2011, when his 175 helped complete a 4-0 whitewash.

The prolific batsman is 12/1 to be man of the match.

With Jonathan Trott and Ian Bell also averaging in the high 40s at the Oval, England’s batsmen should be able to provide a firm base for Swann to bowl them to victory.

Swann has averaged six wickets a match in his last four appearances at the ground, and is set to finish the series as the top wicket-taker, with the spinner currently three wickets ahead of Ryan Harris at the top of the rankings.

For the visitors, Chris Rogers could finish a steady debut series as their top run scorer. The opener is two runs shy of Michael Clarke’s tally of 346, and has a superlative record at the Oval.

Rogers has scored two centuries and three 50s in six innings at the ground at an average of 109.8, and with Clarke’s Oval average a paltry 9.33, the opener should be backed at 11/10 to overtake his captain in the match.

Australia will hope to grab a consolation victory against an unfocused England, but the hosts are not in a forgiving mood, and should round off a 4-0 series win at the Oval.
