Notts County vying for Liverpool scalp following Capital One Cup draw

Published:

Notts County’s reward for fending off Fleetwood in the opening round of the Capital One Cup is a trip to Anfield to tackle Liverpool in the second.

The Reds are one of the frontrunners to land the trophy this season, available to back as 8/1 joint-third favourites with Ladbrokes.

The Magpies are a gargantuan 500/1 to achieve the same feat, but the fact that they’ve only won multiple matches in the country’s B-list cup competition in one season since 2006/07, casts serious doubts over their ability to pull off a giant-killing here.

Chris Kiwomya’s side can take heart from the Northampton side that masterminded a penalty shootout victory over the Reds in the 2010/11 rendition of the competition though. However, the Cobblers make half of the two teams from outside the Premier League to eject Liverpool in the past 11 seasons, exemplifying the tall order they face.

A more realistic opportunity for an upset for all you underdog seekers out there comes in the form of Fulham’s trip to the Pirelli Stadium to face League Two’s Burton.

The Brewers ousted Sheffield United in round one owing to an injury-time winner from defender Chris Hussey that guaranteed a 2-1 win at Bramall Lane and they will consider drawing the Cottagers more than substantial recompense.

Martin Jol’s charges haven’t played more than two matches in this competition in any of the previous eight seasons, going out at this stage on four occasions and with an onus on improving last seasons’ Premier League fortunes, don’t expect them to be giving Burton both barrels at any point of their second round tie.

Other ties that could be placed in shock territory are Bury’s trip to Carrow Road to play Norwich, Cardiff’s visit to Middlesbrough’s conquerors Accrington Stanley and West Brom’s hosting of Football League new boys Newport County, who dumped out Brighton in the ball-rolling round.
