Wigan v Doncaster: Goals galore in over 2.5 strikes banker
Published:The season may only be a few weeks old, but the games are already mounting for Wigan and, after tasting a second-tier defeat for the first time since April 2005 at Bournemouth last time out, they need to return to winning ways at home to Doncaster.
Rovers bounced back from an opening-day defeat to Blackpool by beating promotion front-runners Blackburn in their second trip of the campaign and they’ll be in good spirits ahead of their first away game of the season.
Paul Dickov’s side are rated at 11/2 to beat the Latics on their own patch, with Wigan heavy favourites at 8/15 and the draw a 14/5 alternative.
The sides have not met since the 2002/03 Football League Trophy. It is a match avid Donny fans will remember fondly after seeing their side prevail on the west side of the Pennines thanks to a single goal from defender Mark Albrighton (who doesn’t play right wing for Aston Villa these days, in case you were wondering).
Their away form to end the previous season was a key reason behind their eventual winning of League One. Four victories from their final five road games saw them topple Bournemouth and Brentford in the race for the title and it’s unlikely they’ll defer too much from this successful set up.
It’s not exactly the most stringent of systems though – three of those four away wins came in games with over 2.5 goals scored.
Wigan aren’t renowned for their frugality at the back so lumping on the 17/20 that this game will yield more than 2.5 strikes is probably the safest bet here.
Owen Coyle’s short tenure at the Latics’ helm has churned out a mini trend, with only one side finding the net from his three games in charge.
A price of 3/4 says this run stretches into a fourth match, though given Donny’s record on the road, it’s probably worth swerving in favour of backing both teams to score at 20/21.
