Woods finally justifies Major favouritism ahead of PGA C’ship

With the PGA Championship just days away golf’s greatest talent hints he’s ready to add to his 14 Major titles with a crushing victory at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

It’s never a surprise to see Tiger Woods top the betting ahead of any Major tournament he enters, such is the American’s phenomenal talent and record of winning.

However, there have been many instances since his last triumph at the 2008 U.S Open, where his pre-Major favouritism is purely based on name and reputation alone.

This is not the case now though. Woods is 3/1 to kick-start his pursuit of Jack Nicklaus’ 18 Major titles with victory in the PGA Championship at Oakhill Country Club and this time, he definitely is the man to beat.

After two barren seasons on the PGA Tour due to all sorts of off-course issues, Tiger’s gradual return to form was highlighted by three tournament wins in 2012, paving the way to further success in 2013.

Fast forward seven months and five tournament-wins later and the sport’s most recognisable face is finally showing the form which has already immortalised him among the game’s greats.

Two top-ten finishes from three Major starts this season have hinted that the breakthrough is close, including a sixth-place finish at last month’s British Open.

Following on from Muirfield, Woods has taken his game to another level by destroying the field in a seven-shot victory at the Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone, held less than a week before the PGA starts.

This resounding triumph witnessed Woods posting a near-flawless second-round 61, only the fourth time in his exalted career the American has shot that low, sandwiched between two other sub-70 rounds.

The victory also represented the second time Woods has matched the most wins (8) for any single PGA Tour event, after achieving the same feat with victory in the Arnold Palmer Invitational earlier this year.

As if this return to such sublime form wasn’t a big enough indicator that Woods is ready to rumble, the last four times he won the PGA Championship in 1999, 2000, 2006 and 2007; he also succeeded at Firestone.
