Capital One Cup: Posh to exploit uncertainty at Sunderland

Published:

The Capital One Cup third round has thrown up some interesting betting opportunities, with Peterborough’s trip to a post-Di Canio Sunderland of particular interest. This treble pays at 21/1:

Hull v Huddersfield – Hull @ 5/6

Hull’s performances have impressed many since gaining promotion to the Premier League, and are currently sitting comfortably in 11th place. The Tigers were good value for their 3-2 victory over Newcastle at St James’ Park last weekend, and also won plaudits for their performance in their 2-0 defeat to Manchester City.

Steve Bruce’s side will be confident of progressing here having twice beaten Huddersfield in last season’s Championship – the Terriers failed to register in either fixture, and have failed to score in two of their last three matches.

Sunderland v Peterborough – Peterborough @ 4/1

Sunderland have now lost their last three matches, and have installed Kevin Ball as caretaker manager after dismissing Paolo Di Canio.

While the Peterborough camp have stated they anticipate a Sunderland backlash, it would hardly be surprising to see the Posh compound the Wearsiders’ misery given their record in this year’s League Cup.

After two rounds they are the competition’s leading scorers with 11 goals, putting six unanswered strikes past Championship side Reading in their previous tie. Posh have always been an offensive force under Darren Ferguson, and with 19 goals in eight league games so far look well worth supporting here.

In addition, Sunderland will be without striker Steven Fletcher after he suffered a dislocated shoulder in the ignominious defeat to West Brom.

Fulham v Everton – Everton @ 7/5

Everton are the only unbeaten side in the Premier League, and will expect to progress against a struggling Fulham outfit which has failed to win any of its last four League Cup fixtures, and which is are winless in six at Craven Cottage.

Martin Jol’s side have scored a joint-lowest three goals in the Premier League, and given their current position in the bottom three may be inclined to view the Capital One Cup as an expendable concern.

The Toffees are unbeaten in eight with the west London side, wining six, and represent exceptional value at 7/5 to win tonight. Roberto Martinez’s side come into the match having taken three points away from Upton Park at the weekend, and pipped Chelsea 1-0 prior to that.

A £10 stake returns £220.
