Chisora to finally claim Euro title with points win over Gerber

Whether of his own doing or not, controversy appears to have followed Dereck Chisora throughout his career.

As he prepares to fight German Edmund Gerber in London on Saturday night for the vacant European Title, many will remember his first shot at the belt in 2011, a loss to Finnish fighter Robert Helenius.

The majority of neutral onlookers that night in Helsinki agreed that Chisora was unfortunate to be on the wrong end of a hometown decision. It’s a result that still rankles with the fighter who followed the loss with successive defeats against Vitali Klitschko and David Haye.

But following his high-profile and unseemly out-of-the-ring spat with Haye which saw his license revoked, Chisora is back on the comeback trail with two successive victories, as he eyes a victory tonight in order to line up another title shot at any of his former conquerors.

The Zimbabwe-born fighter is the overwhelming 1/9 favourite to beat Gerber, but he’ll do well not to underestimate his opponent. Gerber (11/2) has won 23 of his 24 fights, including 14 KOs, and though the level of opposition doesn’t match that faced by Chisora, the German has a solid chin and is capable of absorbing a few hits.

Chisora’s last win, over American Malik Scott at Wembley, came in the sixth round and with 11 KO’s to his name, he can be backed at 8/11 to win by KO again tonight.

But given that the German is yet to be stopped – his only loss so far by majority decision against Michael Sprott – the pick of the bunch looks like the 8/5 on offer for Gerber to take Chisora all the way before losing out on points to the superior fighter.
