Jenson Button can come good for McLaren in Monza

Published:

While Jenson Button will be disappointed with his season so far, the Italian Grand Prix at Monza provides an opportunity for the McLaren man to get some decent points on the board. And given that the race marks the 50th anniversary of the team, it would be fitting that Button ends up on the podium.

Even without the sentimentality, given that Button has three runner-up places from his last four starts in the Italian Grand Prix, he looks a cracking price at 11/1 to secure a top three finish in Lombardy.

Some might be deterred by Button’s failure to complete the race last year, but until being forced to retire he was in a fantastic position. A sudden drop of fuel pressure meant that he had to pull out whilst occupying second place after 32 laps.

Prior to that only Michael Schumacher was faster than the Brit in practise, recording a lap only three tenths of a second quicker than the Somerset man. It is 25/1 that Button is the fastest in practice this time.

Button then went on to qualify in second place after being narrowly edged out by his team-mate at the time Lewis Hamilton, equalling his performance in 2010. In fact, Button has started in one of the first three on the grid in every race at Monza since 2009 and so 66/1 looks huge for the 2009 Formula One Champion to be the fastest qualifier, especially considering that price is available each-way.

Of course McLaren, who are looking to avoid going a season without a win since 2006, hopes in this race do not lie solely with Button and team-mate Sergio Perez is also worth a second look as an outside shot.

Perez finished second in this race last year when driving for Sauber last year and is 33/1 to finish on the podium again, or a more conservative 5/1 to finish in the top six.
