Ladbrokes offer juicy 25/1 carrot about Australia’s Triple Crown bid

| 16.09.2013

The Aidan O’Brien-trained Australia has already been labelled the ‘best horse he has ever had’ by his esteemed handler.

And the impressive juvenile looks primed to achieve what stablemate Camelot narrowly missed out on and secure an historic English Triple Crown.

Ladbrokes are going 25/1 about the son of Galileo’s chances of landing the 2000 Guineas, Derby and the St Leger.

Given the two-year-old’s sterling performances thus far in his fledgling career, that price may not last long.

A defeat on debut has been quickly forgiven with two wins following that maiden run at the Curragh.

The most recent of those scores – a dazzling finish to secure victory in the  ICON Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Trial Stakes – showed all the hallmarks of a potential Classic winner.

Settled in third, Australia went on to display a remarkable turn of foot in the home straight at Leopardstown. The heavily fancied 2/5 favourite Free Eagle was eventually slammed by a six-length margin.

That victory prompted many firms to slash the odds of Australia taking the 2014 Epsom Derby with 4/1 currently available for a horse who’ll clearly have plenty to give in middle distance contests.

It’s 6/1 that Australia lands the 2000 Guineas and he’ll be difficult to oppose over a mile following that emphatic win over the same distance across the Irish Sea.

Entries for Autumn’s Dewhurst Stakes and Racing Post Trophy will have many onlookers feverishly checking the progress of O’Brien’s latest star turn.

And should more success follow, the interest in Australia’s Classic credentials will only intensify.

Given his early career promise a first English Triple Crown since Nijinsky’s feat in 1970 may yet be on the horizon.
