Mourinho’s reserves ready to step up to the mark against Swindon

Jose Mourinho goes in search of a third League Cup triumph with Chelsea and the Blues’ progress in this season’s competition is unlikely to be checked when they visit Swindon Town.

The League One Robins saw off higher-ranked opposition in the form of Queens Park Rangers to reach this third round stage.

But the Hoops’ west London neighbours represent a far sterner test and it’s no surprise to see Mark Cooper’s side installed as the 8/1 outsiders.

Chelsea are the heavily fancied 2/5 favourites to see off their opponents in 90 minutes with the draw available at 4/1.

While only a second League Cup exit in the last 10 years to lower league opposition would cause a major upset there is some hope for those tempted by Swindon’s long odds.

The Blues were made to pay for their inability to close out a fourth round tie against Championship Burnley in 2008 with the Clarets emerging victorious 5-4 on penalties.

Also, Swindon have triumphed in four of their last five League Cup contests against sides from a higher division and are unbeaten at home since February.

Those statistics alone could attract those who see more sense in taking the 4/1 for the home side to qualify for the next round.

However, given both team’s recent trends, the real value could lie in backing a glut of goals at the County Ground.

In four of the host’s last six games there have been over 3.5 goals scored, with five finding their way into the Robins’ net in their previous three contests.

Ladbrokes are offering odds of 7/5 that four or more strikes on target are successful with this tie representing a fantastic opportunity for Chelsea’s misfiring attack to hit form.

Should that be the case then expect the tournament favourites’ odds of 9/2 to shorten further still.
