Rizeena to prove Group 1 credentials again in Fillies’ Mile

| 24.09.2013

All eyes at Newmarket will be on the Group 1 Fillies’ Mile, where Rizeena will be hoping to repeat her last performance, when pouncing late on to win the Moyglare Stad Stakes in Ireland.

There are also two other Group-level contests that feature on the Channel 4 televised card.

13:40 Newmarket – Miss France @ 10/3

The form of Radiator’s 15-length mauling of a Lingfield race last time has received an extra boost when the runner-up reappeared to finish fourth to Wedding Ring, who has placed form at Group 3 level in the book.

This makes him a worthy favourite for this Group 3 contest, but considering Andre Fabre has only sent three runners to Britain in 2013 before now, his decision to race Miss France warrants a second look.

14:10 Newmarket – Lanansaak @ 4/1

Igugu has sound claims on her British debut, having run creditably in South Africa and Dubai in her career, while Maureen and Zurigha will go close if running to the level of Guineas performances previously in the campaign.

However, it was hard not to be taken with the success of Lanansaak last time over 1m, with 14 lengths back to the horse in third and although this is a big step up in class, she is massively unexposed.

14:40 Newmarket – Montiridge @ 10/3

Soft Falling Rain is set to go off around 1/1 for the Joel Stakes, despite losing his seven-race unbeaten streak at Newbury last time to Gregorian.

He could find one too good again here as Montiridge is a big price if recapturing the form of his Group 3 victory over 1m earlier this season, when barely coming off the bridle.

Richard Hannon’s three-year-old ran flat last time, but is worth giving another chance.

15:15 Newmarket – Rizeena @ 6/4

Although eight line up in this Group 1 contest, it does look a two-horse race between Rizeena and Ihtimal, with preference for the former.

Not only is she the only horse in the field to have already won in this level of company, she runs in the Fillies’ Mile without carrying a Group 1 penalty.

Furthermore, she beat a high-class field at the Curragh last time over 7f and looked every inch like this step up in trip would be ideal.

It should additionally not be forgotten that this is a horse that has shown the speed to win a Group 2 over the minimum distance of 5f this season.
