Rooney 6/4 to catch Charlton after joining Man Utd’s 200 club
Published:David Moyes has indicated that Wayne Rooney was made aware of the possibility that he could become Manchester United’s all-time leading scorer over the summer and it is now just 6/4 that the England striker does surpass current record holder Bobby Charlton.
Rooney’s double in the 4-2 Champions League win over Bayer Leverkusen ensured that he became just the fourth player in Man Utd history to reach 200 goals for the club, following Charlton, Denis Law and Jack Rowley.
He now requires 50 to move beyond Charlton’s record of 249 goals and it is 6/4 that Rooney becomes Man Utd’s new all-time top scorer.
The big factor in how many goals Rooney gets is whether he remains at Old Trafford beyond the end of his current contract.
Rooney is now inside the final two years of his present deal and chief executive Ed Woodward said earlier this summer that he was not afraid to let any contract run down.
The 27-year-old now has three in his last two appearances and has previously reached 34 goals in all competitions in two separate seasons for Man Utd.
His last four seasons have gone 34, 16, 34 and 16 in terms of goals and if this streak is to continue, Rooney will be on the verge of surpassing Law’s total of 237 Man Utd goals by the end of the campaign.
If he does manage to reach this total, then the 7/2 available that he scores more Man Utd goals than strike partner Robin van Persie will look a particularly big price.
Up next for Man Utd is a Manchester derby at the Etihad, where Rooney is an appetising 8/1 to score first, 5/2 to be on target at any time in the 90 minutes and 66/1 to leave with the match ball after registering a hat-trick.
