Suarez and Sturridge can emulate SAS of old for Liverpool
Published:Liverpool are up to second in the Premier League and the combination of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge in attack looks like it could turn the Reds into genuine title contenders.
Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton formed the original SAS strikeforce, as they fired Blackburn Rovers to the 1994/95 Premier League title, with 50 goals between them.
Flash forward nearly 20 years later and Suarez’s return to the Liverpool team alongside the top-flight’s leading scorer Sturridge, looks like a partnership ready-made to keep producing the goal-shaped goods for Liverpool.
It’s an understanding which was born in the second-half of last season and against Sunderland the pair went about rekindling it, with Sturridge twice putting it on a plate for his partner, after opening the scoring himself.
That’s now five goals for ‘Studger’ from six games, leaving him one ahead of the competition in the race to be crowned the Premier League’s top scorer.
It may be too early for some to start talking about the title, nevertheless, on this evidence punters would now be forgiven for considering the 10/1 on offer with Ladbrokes and certainly the 13/10 for Liverpool to finish in the top four.
Meanwhile, Suarez’ brace equalled his first league goals of the season, though the 23 he bagged last term indicate the Uruguayan could be another serious contender this year, with the likes of Robin van Persie and Christian Benteke troubled by injury and only two goals in front.
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers was left purring over the duo in his post-match press conference at the Stadium of Light, when he exclaimed their partnership to be “up there with the best”.
There may be a long way to go before they can actually be recognised as the ‘best’, though the way they link up for Liverpool makes them a potent force which will trouble any defence they face.
The awareness of each other’s movement, combined with their individual trickery and pace, ensure it’s a hard task for defenders to keep tabs on them, with the final Liverpool goal against Sunderland a perfect example.
