The next young French striker that Arsenal may want to target

Published:

Arsenal’s scouring of La Liga this summer obviously mainly revolved around Mesut Ozil, but also included explosive Levante attacker Ruben Garcia and it is another youngster that may well interest Arsene Wenger in the future.

Wenger’s fondness of signing young French talent is well known and he walked the familiar path again this summer when recruiting Yaya Sanogo from Auxerre.

Given that the Gunners are still a striker light, it would be no surprise to see another arrive in January or next summer at the worst and a Frenchman currently making an impact in La Liga should be on the shortlist.

Thievy has certainly made an impact at Espanyol so far this season, stepping off the bench to score in each of their opening two fixtures, away at Celta Vigo to earn a point and then at home to Valencia to confirm victory.

He showed his capabilities when sent on loan to Las Palmas last season by netting 12 goals and this return helped him gain a new Espanyol contract, set to expire in 2017.

Not only is he adept at finishing with both feet, he has a knack of making the right types of runs in behind defenders and Thievy has a rawness that can be nurtured by Wenger and developed.

There is a real possibility that he will be an even bigger threat to Sergio Garcia for a starting berth later this season and if he can reach double figures for goals this campaign, Espanyol may be forced to fend off offers for his signature.

Where Arsenal finish is unlikely to have much impact on whether or not they could tempt Thievy to sign, but it is 17/20 in the Premier League odds that they qualify for the Champions League again by virtue of retaining their spot in the top four.
