Van’s the man to open the scoring for Manchester United

It might not be the most ‘out there’ tip, but it really could pay to side with Robin van Persie to open the scoring as Manchester United look to get back to winning ways against Liverpool.

The Dutch hitman followed up from his monstrous 26-goal season last year by bagging twice in his side’s league opener against Swansea and looks set to lead United’s line with some real ferocity again this campaign.

He can be forgiven for failing to find the net in what was a rather dull encounter against Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea side, a game that was bereft of any real chances.

Liverpool are a side that Van Persie certainly comes alive when facing. Six goals in the last six encounters with the Anfield side speaks volumes and a very reasonable price of 9/2 to bag first this time round looks well worth taking.

The Red Devils have been potent when away from Old Trafford  of late – netting in 19 in there last 20 away games – and look in good shape to continue that good run.

The news that Kolo Toure, who has been putting in some good shifts for the Liverpool backline this year, is a doubt will surely increased RVP’s chances of bagging a goal or two.

In fact the 25/1 that the Dutchman puts three past Simon Mignolet shouldn’t be dismissed with any certainty.

For those seeking a bigger price to invest in, look no further than Steven Gerrard. Liverpool’s talismanic midfielder has scored in two of the last three meetings between these two old rivals at Anfield, and at 11/1, could be very tempting to some.

Over the last five seasons, the England captain’s league record has seen him score on average every 2.45 games. He has yet to get on the scoresheet this season. Is this his time to get off the mark?

It is sure to be a hard fought, high-tempo encounter but it is well worth sticking with the familiar faces when it comes to the First Goalscorer markets.
