Worth Whelan paying that bit more to bring Rhodes to Wigan

Published:

Having scored 30 goals for Blackburn last season and four in five Championship appearances in the current campaign, it is a slight surprise that Premier League interest has been so scarce for the services of Jordan Rhodes.

Instead it has been left to Wigan to show the most interest in his services, with a bid worth a total of £10m, with £6m up front, having already been rejected. This is no surprise bearing in mind Blackburn paid £8m to lure him from Huddersfield.

It is believed that Blackburn are not asking for a big jump on the rejected offer, wishing for an initial £8m, with the total climbing to £12m based on extras.

Blackburn remain the 2/5 favourites to have retained Rhodes after the closing of the transfer window, with manager Gary Bowyer signalling that his star striker will not be leaving Ewood Park.

Wigan are priced at 7/4 to complete the deal for Rhodes, but much is likely to hinge on the future of James McCarthy and whether or not he seals his anticipated switch to Everton.

At present, this is looking unlikely with Roberto Martinez not keen on Wigan’s valuation and instead prioritising Porto’s Fernando and Gareth Barry as more suitable replacements to Marouane Fellaini, should he join Manchester United.
