Chicarito could turn Tottenham into genuine title contenders

| 09.10.2013

West Ham ruthlessly exposed Tottenham’s lack of bite in the Premier League so far this season with victory at White Hart Lane, but the news that Javier Hernandez could soon be angling for a move should have Andre Villas-Boas on high alert.

It was only a matter of time before ‘Chicarito’ decided that being the fourth man at the Old Trafford strikers’ trough, was not a position that befits a goal-scorer of his abilities.

The ‘Little Pea’, as he’s affectionately known in his home country of Mexico, has made just two starts under new boss David Moyes and is behind Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck in the queue for a starting spot.

And now Chicharito has admitted his quest to nail down a starting berth may end up being “elsewhere for another club.”

The 25-year-old said: “I just need to be given more opportunities to showcase what I can do.”

Having bagged 20 goals in his debut season for the champions, mainly from the bench, and having regularly delivered goals as a substitute in the ensuing seasons, it’s not difficult to see his point.

Atletico Madrid were reportedly circling in the summer, before securing David Villa’s signature, however there would likely be no shortage of Premier League suitors waiting with open arms.

Tottenham certainly need another top striker, as their bid to finish in the top four has faltered, with their odds of qualifying for the Champions League now out at 6/4, following that demoralising loss to the Hammers.

Despite having acquired a plethora of attack-minded midfielders, the Lillywhites have only scored more than one Premier League goal on a single occasion so far this term, in their 2-0 win over Norwich.

Meanwhile, spot kicks were required to overcome Crystal Palace and Swansea in their opening games and early talk of AVB having assembled a potential title-winning squad have cooled, along with Spurs’ price of 14/1.

However, signing a player of Chicarito’s calibre and, crucially with his Premier League experience in January could rekindle a genuine assault on the title, not just the top four.
