Man Utd v Southampton: Stern Saints to limit goals

Published:

After Adnan Januzaj’s double saw off Sunderland, David Moyes is aiming to string together back-to-back wins for the first time at Manchester United as Southampton visit Old Trafford.

However, the Saints have crept up to fourth after winning their past three league games, including away at Liverpool, justifying their relatively short price of 11/2 to win the match.

Manchester United lost their last home game 2-1 to West Brom, and are yet to score from open play in three league games in front of their own fans.

Southampton have the best defensive record in the league, conceding just twice in seven games and keeping five clean sheets.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have not let in a goal in any competition since August, and if they avoid giving Wayne Rooney too many free-kick chances near their box, United could struggle to break down their defences.

Southampton are 5/1 to keep a clean sheet, but the better bet is to back under 2.5 goals in the match at 20/21.

All seven of the Saints’ games so far have seen two goals at most, as have two of the three league games so far at Old Trafford.

The only game to go over that mark was West Brom’s win, with United themselves netting just three goals in three home games.

Januzaj is 10/3 to notch his first home goal for the league champions, but Rooney is the better bet, having scored seven in his last eight games for club and country.

The striker bagged both United goals in the 2-1 win over Southampton in Manchester last season, and is 5/6 to net at any time.

Rooney has five goals in his past four matches against the Saints for United and Everton, including three in two at Old Trafford.
