England v Chile: Experimental Lions to be exposed by visitors
Published:Given the ever-growing list of high profile drop-outs from Roy Hodgson’s squad and the temptation to field many fringe players at Wembley, it may be a good time for punters to go against England with a highly dangerous Chile team in town.
We’ve already alluded to the fact that England have been on the drift for victory as the week has progressed and the latest odds show the Three Lions to have made the transition from 8/11 favourites to 1/1 for the win by matchday.
England may be at home, though there is some pretty solid-looking reasoning to suggest they could come out on the wrong side of the scoreline, with Chile’s odds of 3/1 for victory taking on considerable appeal.
Hodgson is without his captain Steven Gerrard, Daniel Sturridge, Rickie Lambert, Kyle Walker, Danny Welbeck and Michael Carrick who have all dropped out in the build-up.
Therefore, even though some new faces were always going to get a chance, the team which starts the game is likely to wildly different to the last few qualifiers and even friendlies.
This in turn may lead to a more disjointed display than usual (if possible), as many players will not be used to playing together in the same team.
However, it’s the strength of their visitors and their rich run of form which marks Chile out as a team ready to repeat the victory they achieved on their last visit to Wembley in 1998.
Chile are unbeaten since November 14th last year, which takes in a run of nine games in all competitions.
More impressively still, two of their last three results have been draws against Spain and a Columbia side which just defeated Belgium 2-0, while they saw off Ecuador 2-1 in their final qualifier last month which sealed their spot at Brazil 2014.
