Froch will prove he’s a worthy favourite and silence Groves
Published:George Groves (19-0) has continued his war of words with fellow Briton Carl Froch (31-2) ahead of their upcoming super-middleweight world title showdown in Manchester.
The west London fighter claims he should be the bookies’ favourite ahead of the pair’s highly-anticipated bout, an outburst that that will only serve to further heighten the tension surrounding an already charged affair.
Ladbrokes are offering odds of 3/1 for Groves to triumph and wrestle the WBA and IBF straps away from Froch, while The Cobra has been installed as the heavy 1/4 favourite to retain his titles.
The draw, an outcome neither pugilist has encountered before, is available at 25/1, although the real steal could come in the form of a points victory for Froch.
The three-time world champion is used to going the distance with seven of his previous 10 fights going to the judges’ scorecards and the 11/4 about a Froch victory by decision or technical decision may well be the selection worth backing.
Meanwhile, Groves’ toughest assignments to date have also gone the full 12 rounds with Glen Johnson and James DeGale both defeated by The Saint.
But Froch represents a different level of challenge entirely, and given his opponent’s sustained insults, The Sheriff of Nottingham will be eager to silence a challenger 11 years his junior.
Not many can doubt the validity or threat of Groves’ challenge.
However, this will be Froch’s 11th consecutive world title fight and that class and experience should prevail once the opening round bell rings at the Phones4U Arena.
Also, the champion’s devastating stoppage of Lucien Bute shows he still retains the knockout power to seriously trouble Groves early on in their encounter.
Bute was blown away in the fifth round of the aforementioned contest, with 4/1 offered for this fight to be won between rounds four and six, a bracket where Froch has ended proceedings in nine of his previous career victories.
It’s also worth remembering that Froch has already claimed he’s dropped Groves in a previous sparring session together.
Should Froch find Groves to be more elusive than the 7/5 for the fight to go the distance is tempting.
If his opponent can make the necessary step up in class and back up all of his pre-fight bluster then there’s every possibility we’ll see that outcome.
