Highly-praised Forster beginning to look a World Cup shoo-in

Published:

Fraser Forster has been the subject of a vast amount of praise in the last month or so and this has to give him major claims of being one of the three goalkeepers named by Roy Hodgson in England’s World Cup squad.

Joe Hart seems the only goalkeeper assured of a place in the 23-man party, with five others doing battle to be one of his understudies.

Forster and Norwich’s John Ruddy, the two goalkeepers in the squad for England’s friendlies with Chile and Germany alongside Hart, are both 4/5 to make the World Cup squad, with Ben Foster 5/4, Jack Butland 4/1 and David Stockdale 33/1.

The standard of the Scottish Premier League has been called into question in the past, but this does bring with it pressure for Forster, whose mistakes are likely to be magnified given that he may have little to do for the most part of fixtures.

Meanwhile, playing for Celtic has given Forster Champions League experience, which has generated admiration from a number of bigger names from within the sport.

Xavi has labelled Forster a world class goalkeeper and a possible future Barcelona number one, while Gianluigi Buffon sees no reason as to why the 25-year-old cannot be among the best in the game.

Chile’s Alexis Sanchez is the latest to wax lyrical over Forster by labelling him a ‘complete player’ and he looks assured to get at least a half of action in the upcoming friendly.

England are 33/20 to keep a clean sheet against Chile and 23/10 to win the game to nil.
