Home win to nil tempting for a beefy Merseyside derby payout

Liverpool have been flush with goals since their revered and feared SAS partnership was reunited.

However, even the unquestionable brilliance of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge has struggled to penetrate the Premier League’s most formidable defensive units; a category which Everton’s back four falls into.

This may make a punt on the Toffees’ win to nil a worthy course of action to take ahead of the forthcoming Merseyside derby at a princely 19/5.

Indeed, Everton’s previous five victories over their fiercest rivals would have all entitled backers of this bet to a profit so if the blue half of the city is set for celebrations then Premier League history suggests that the same result should not be discounted.

Being difficult to beat has become synonymous with Everton’s 21st century identity, but several expected this asset to evaporate under the command of Roberto Martinez, giving the lack of defensive nous his Wigan side frequently amused Premier League spectators with over the years.

It will have come as a massive surprise to many then, to see the Toffees boasting one of the meanest defences in the division and on a run that stretches beyond 330 minutes without seeing their net ripple.

Chelsea and Tottenham are amongst the big names unable to bag a goal against them, while three clean sheets heading into the derby must give the Goodison Park club every confidence. They’re 5/2 to repeat the feat here.

A further factor offering support to this is that the Reds have frequently been found wanting when facing up to the sterner backlines.

Arsenal and Southampton both kept Brendan Rodgers’ side at bay fairly comfortably to pick up wins without having their sheets sullied, while Manchester United also shut them out in the third round of the Capital One Cup.

While Liverpool remain more than capable of bursting Everton’s clean sheet bubble, it’s evident that an underdog win to nil is not an impossible outcome in this all-Mersey affair.
