Increasingly likely that Real Madrid will return for Suarez in January

Real Madrid may have failed in their efforts to bring in a world-class striker in the summer, but another approach for Luis Suarez in January can be expected now that the club have seemingly got their finances in order.

According to Marca, Suarez came mightily close to heading to the Bernabeu in the summer, with his agent Pere Guardiola getting most of the groundwork in place. Contract length, salary and transfer fee were all reportedly finalised.

However, with Gareth Bale’s world-record transfer from Tottenham milking the Spanish giants of their funds and Real Madrid struggling to sell to balance the books, the Suarez deal had to be put on the backburner.

Mesut Ozil did eventually depart, but as this deal was completed in the closing minutes of the window, there was never enough time to push the Suarez offer through.

Carlo Ancelotti still wants another striker and it would be no surprise to see the Suarez rumour mill warmed back up in January and he now seems their number one target, ahead of fellow South Americans Sergio Aguero and Radamel Falcao.

The fact that Liverpool are not involved in European competition is a leading reason for this, as he would be available for selection in the knockout rounds of the Champions League.

His scintillating form of eight goals in six Premier League appearances this season has obviously reignited their interest too, as Real Madrid formulate a plan to bridge the six-point gap to La Liga leaders Barcelona.

Real Madrid’s odds at present are 4/1 to win La Liga and with goalkeeper Victor Valdes joining a Barca injury list that already includes Lionel Messi, Daniel Alves, Jord Alba, Xavi and Cristian Tello, this may prove lucrative.
