Robin’s a great price to outscore his old Arsenal teammates

Everyone loves a storyline in football and none more so than ‘big star scores against former club’, which could well be the case as Manchester United entertain Premier League leaders Arsenal in Sunday’s televised showdown.

There has seldom been a league meeting in recent times when Manchester United were as desperate for a win over Arsenal as they are now, with eight points separating themselves and their rivals.

As the saying goes cometh the hour, cometh the man, and on this occasion that man has to be former Arsenal goal-grabber extraordinaire Robin van Persie, who now dons the colours of United.

The Dutchman is well-rehearsed for this script too, having scored in both games against Arsenal last season, though he resisted the temptation to celebrate on both occasions.

Ahead of the next big clash at Old Trafford, Ladbrokes have deemed it a 6/4 shot that RVP manages to show the same restraint again should he score, though a moment of badge-kissing euphoria can also be backed at 10/1 – while teammate Wayne Rooney is much shorter to kiss-the-badge at 4/1.

In other RVP specials released by the firm, the number 20 is a tempting price of 9/2 to score more goals than the visitors, with strike-partner Rooney 6/1 to achieve the same feat.

Meanwhile, 16/1 says Van Persie misses from the spot, as he did against Real Sociedad, and it’s 25/1 he sees red against his former teammates.

Arsenal head into the match as joint second favourites for the title at 11/4, with United out to 7/1.

Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: “Punters have been quick to back Arsenal to double up following their excellent result in the week. This game will have a huge bearing on the title betting with United set to drift to a double-figure price should they lose.”

The visitors will start the game at 11/5 outsiders for victory, while United will begin as 6/5 favourites and the draw is 12/5.
