The U’s won’t lose as Cambridge headline a monster FA Cup treble

Published:

The FA Cup is back! And it’s that time of the year when a host of Football League clubs desperately try to avoid the embarrassment of falling at the first hurdle against their non-league counterparts.

Cambridge United, Tamworth and Macclesfield Town are the upstarts who feature in this romantic 50/1 treble, with plenty of reasons to suggest they can all secure a safe passage to the second round.

Bury v Cambridge United – Cambridge United to win @ 11/5

Crisis club Bury welcome Conference Premier leaders Cambridge United to Gigg Lane having won just one of their previous 11 fixtures in all competitions.

Meanwhile, the visiting U’s have been in fine form this season, registering 11 victories in 17 games to rise to the summit of the fifth tier.

Jez George’s side look primed to take the scalp of opposition who sit just three points above them in the English football pyramid with the League Two hosts’ lack of firepower a potentially crucial deciding factor – the Shakers have scored just three goals in their previous six matches.

Macclesfield v Swindon – Macclesfield to win @ 4/1

One year on and Swindon won’t be relishing this repeat of last season’s encounter at the same stage.

The Silkmen were 2-0 victors over their more illustrious opponents on that occasion and we think the magic of the FA Cup is going to leave the club’s supporters feeling giddy once again when their side emerges triumphant.

Seven wins in their last nine matches, including a 7-0 drubbing of Vauxhall Motors to reach the first round, adds further ammunition to the Macclesfield cause.

If needed, additional encouragement is offered by the fact that Swindon have struggled on the road of late, losing five of their eight games away from the County Ground this term.

And despite their relatively lofty League One status the Robins can be brought back down to earth with a bump, just as they were when the pair met in Wiltshire last year.

Tamworth v Cheltenham – Tamworth to win @ 11/4

Ignore Tamworth’s league form this season. The Lambs have cup pedigree with last year’s march to the third round serving as enough inspiration for the current crop of players to repeat their previous heroics.

Coupled with the fact that Cheltenham have flattered to deceive in 2013/2014, the ingredients are there for another upset to take place in Staffordshire.

Dale Belford’s outfit are unbeaten at home in their last five in the FA Cup, winning four of those ties.

By contrast, Cheltenham have lost five of their eight matches on the road this season and their confidence could be about to take another hefty knock.

A £10 stake on this treble returns £600.
