Could Swann be set to give the lucrative IPL a spin?

| 23.12.2013

Graeme Swann may have called time on his international and first-class cricket career but that hasn’t stopped Ladbrokes looking at what might be next for the former England off-spinner.

And the bookies make the former Notts bowler, who took 255 wickets in 60 Test matches for England, 6/4 to bring down the curtain on his career in the lucrative Indian Premier League.

Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said:”Swann’s options are wide open but we think he may well give the IPL a spin.”

But the 34-year-old will have to convince the cash cows of the IPL to take a chance on him after he was snubbed in the auction for the 2011 edition of the T20 tournament.

The Nottinghamshire star, who had a price reserve of £252,0000, was also left disappointed in 2012 after being overlooked in the auction for a second time.

But now Swann, who took 155 wickets for England in 118 T20 and ODI matches, could become a target for the likes of the Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Daredevils with the news that he will be available for the duration of the 2014 IPL after his sudden retirement.

However, if you think the former Northants player next move will be to take up a seat in front of the camera and into the commentary box, then the 33/1 on him leading Sky Sports cricket coverage at any time within the next 10 years will be much more appealing.

While TV executives will be moving quickly to get someone with Swann’s character and expertise to enhance the cricket watching experience, the finger spinner may chose to throw himself into his other love, music.

In his spare time, Swann fronts rock band Dr Comfort and the Lurid Revelations and it is 100/1 that one of England’s sporting characters tops the UK singles chart at any point.
