King of Stats: Check out the numbers for the King George VI Chase

Published:

Paul Nicholls will be out to add to his seven wins in the King George VI Chase this Boxing Day with Al Ferof but could face stiff completion from Nicky Henderson’s Captain Conan.

Here are all the numbers you need to know ahead of the big race.

9 – Each of the previous nine King George winners have been drawn from the first two in the betting and there has not been a winner sent off at greater than 9/2 since way back in 2002. Keep a close eye on Cue Card at 5/2.

7 – Long Run’s success last year means that all of the previous seven King George winners have been bred in France, with 18 of the 31 horses placed in the last 11 years. Dynaste leads the way for the Gallic challengers at 7/2.

7 – Seven of the last eight King George victors also ran in the annual Betfair Chase earlier in the same campaign. The 6/1 shot Silviniaco Conti could be one to watch.

10 – Just two of the last 10 winners of the King George have been over the age of 10, meaning this could be a contest for the younger competitors. Six-year-old 25/1 shot Captain Conan is one that appeals.

5 – The victor of the Ryanair Chase has run in the King George five times in the last 11 years and has not even managed to place. Can Cue Card break this trend?

10 – Every one of the last 10 King George VI winners has enjoyed two or more Grade 1 chase victories – keep an eye out for 8/1 shot Captain Chris.

7- Of the 10 previous winners, seven of these horses claimed victory on their previous completed start ahead of the big race. Something that 9/2 Al Ferof achieved at Ascot last month.

164 –Ten horses have placed with an official rating of 164 or less in the last seven years of this race and though Champion Court is an outsider at 20/1, this runner certainly fits the bill.
