New favourite emerges to be Spurs’ next boss after Saints win

Published:

If his first audition to be Tottenham’s next permanent manager went awry, Tim Sherwood did his cause a world of good in his first Premier League game as Spurs’ temporary boss by beating Southampton 3-2.

A change of formation, the continued reintegration of previously ousted striker Emmanuel Adebayor, who scored twice, and a clear willingness to implement youth players were all definite points to jot down in Sherwood’s positive column at St Mary’s, with a more attractive style of play the biggest of the lot.

There was a definite increase in the number of clear cut chances strikers Roberto Soldado and Adebayor saw in front of the Southampton goal, with the Spaniard perhaps cursing his rusty finishing for denying him a quick-fire hat-trick in the second half.

Sherwood’s men showed good character too, coming from a goal down to take the lead before edging ahead again after Rickie Lambert’s equaliser.

The former Spurs midfielder, who flexed his youth coaching muscles by introducing Nabil Bentaleb into the middle of the park in the 50th minute, is now the favourite to take permanent charge of the White Hart Lane dugout after that display, with Ladbrokes cutting him from 9/4 to 6/5 that he gets the gig full-time.

Glenn Hoddle is the 6/1 second favourite after expressing his interest in a return to the club in the Sky Sports studio prior to the match, with Frank de Boer 8/1.

It’s 2/1 (in from 5s) that the former Premier League winner is in charge come the final game of this season, either in a temporary or permanent capacity, with Spurs themselves cut from 150/1 to 80/1 to win the Premier League after the Saints victory.

Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said:”Sherwood has given himself more time with the win and the odds of him sticking around have shortened accordingly. Only the most optimistic fans would consider backing them for the title at this stage however.”
