Time to take gamble on Liverpool’s Premier League claims

Published:

Brendan Rodgers described it as “the most complete performance” of his Anfield reign as Liverpool handed out a 5-0 pummelling to Tottenham at White Hart Lane, lifting them back to second in the Premier League table, alerting punters that they could in fact have genuine claims on the title.

Having not dropped out of the Premier League’s top four this season – while occupying second position more than any other club – speculators have been fairly unanimous in their appraisals that grabbing a Champions League spot would be remain the ceiling of Liverpool’s ambition.

However, by thrashing Spurs, the Reds have finally entered into the public reckoning for Premier League supremacy and with odds of 13/2 available on Rodgers’ side, punters who have seen enough to be persuaded into taking a punt shouldn’t hang about.

When casting an eye over Liverpool’s festive programme, the fixtures they are presented with could not be anymore credential-defining.

Assuming they beat Cardiff at Anfield next up, which will briefly send them back to the top as it’s the early Saturday kick-off, then Liverpool travel next to Manchester City and then Stamford Bridge.

So, if the Reds manage to come through those titanic away clashes against two title favourites – Man City are 6/5 and Chelsea 10/3 respectively – then Liverpool’s odds will shrink wildly.

Seeing as no team has yet prevented Manuel Pellegrini’s side from storming to victory at the Etihad, for the Reds even to pick up a point would be seen as a massive statement.

It’s not to say that Liverpool will go on to get something out of either game, but after such a domineering display at the Lane, they will arrive brimming, and with Luis Suarez in such irrepressible mood – now is the time to back the Reds.
