Ferrer to advance at decent odds over formidable opponent

The start of the quarter finals means the Australian Open’s business end is moving into view, with a couple of shocks already confined to the history books.

As ever, we’ve scoured the prices and form to bring you the two best bets from the men’s and women’s draw, with some favourable match betting odds to savour at long last.

David Ferrer to beat Tomas Berdych @ 6/5

That the third-seeded Spaniard finds himself as an odds-against shot to win his quarter final match is cause enough to be concerned, but an examination of the form suggests taking it is still a solid option.

Ferrer has dropped two sets on his way to this point in the tournament, a number that is far inferior to Berdych’s none, but the floppy haired world number three has had a far tougher route to navigate.

The 31-year-old also has a far better head-to-head record over his Czech opponent to fall back on, with Ferrer coming out on top in eight of the pair’s 12 matches, including the only one played on the hard court.

Dominika Cibulkova to beat Simona Halep @ 11/8

The respective conquerors of Jelena Jankovic and Maria Sharapova, Simona Halep and Dominika Cibulkova do battle with a chance to face the winner of Agnieszka Radwanska and Victoria Azarenka in the semi-finals.

It’s the Slovakian 20th seed who is taken to advance in a matchup that she’s won twice in three renditions of, including in straight sets on the hard courts of Indian Wells last year.

Already in the middle of her greatest run at the Australian Open, Cibulkova’s confidence will be sky high having overcome third seed Sharapova in the last round, and her fearlessness in unexperienced waters will see her through.
