Man City to use Cabaye’s PSG arrival to snap up midfield bargain

It’s rare that the words bargain and Manchester City are found in the same sentence, but they seem poised to claim a transfer coup as the January window ticks to a close.

Often with transfer dealings among some of the top clubs the ripple effect that is set in motion runs worldwide.

However, in this case it is just clubs from this continent who are affected, with Yohan Cabaye’s move to Paris St-Germain the catalyst.

Using Cabaye’s arrival at the French champions to their advantage, City could snap up fellow midfielder Blaise Matuidi for a cut-price £3m this January, according to Goal.com.

The French roamer is out of contract this summer and is looking for a significant wage hike before signing on the dotted line of any renewal at the Parc des Princes.

Laurent Blanc’s employers are loathed to grant that wish with the said-to-be £23m arrival of compatriot Cabaye likely to eat into their wage budget.

So, having reached an impasse, PSG are resolved to letting their man go on the cheap now, rather than let the 19-capped international – who made 37 league appearances last term – leave for free at the end of the season.

For City, who are an ever-tumbling 45/1 to win an unprecedented quadruple this season, Matuidi’s arrival would seriously boost a central midfield area that was forced to use Martin Demichelis in a holding role in the recent FA Cup win over Watford.

Yaya Toure and Fernandinho are the obvious first-choice pairing in the middle of the park for City, but injury to either one would mean Manuel Pellegrini would have to turn to one of Javi Garcia, Jack Rodwell or James Milner, all of whom have made less than eight Premier League starts this season.

With strength in depth the key to making footballing history, Matuidi’s arrival would seriously boost the Citizen’s chances of achieving it.
