Matri the man for Fiorentina in Coppa Italia clash with Siena

Published:

Fiorentina will be without Giuseppe Rossi for this Italian cup clash but in new addition Alessandro Matri they have a striker who has hit the ground running at the Stadio Artemio Franchi.

The on-loan striker found the net twice on his debut for the team in purple and is 5/2 to open the scoring here, as he aims to impress before the return of his national team rival.

La Viola are 1/4 favourites for victory given their superior league standing and recent record against Serie B opponents Siena, who are a distant 11/1 for the win.

Fiorentina have won the last three meetings between the two in a fixture traditionally known as the Guelph-Ghibelline derby, a game of much importance to fans of both Tuscany clubs.

That motivation could stir up a response from Siena, who would no doubt be happy to be level with their Florence opponents come the conclusion of the 90 minutes, something on at 17/4 with Ladbrokes.

The Bianconeri have a poor record against Fiorentina though, with their last victory over their old foe being a 1-0 success that came way back in March 2009.

Fans hoping for an upset could therefore back the second-tier Italian side in the handicap market, with Siena evens to win (+2), with that buffer offering them some hope.

The Robur dispatched Serie A side Catania in the last round and that will give them some hope going into this game, with that 4-1 win coming away from home too.

However high-flying Fiorentina could be an entirely different prospect given their fine form in the league.

Vincenzo Montella’s team have won six of their last seven in all competitions, while their last defeat came at the hands of then league leaders Roma back in early December.

In nine of Fiorentina’s 11 victories at the Stadio Artemio Franchi this term, there has been a minimum of three goals scored, making the 7/10 on over 2.5 total goals among the banker bets of the night.

Brazilian stopper Neto, meanwhile, continues to impress between the sticks for the Champions League chasers, having kept four consecutive clean sheets going into this game and is 8/11 to keep Siena out again here.

With a place in the Coppa Italia semi-finals on the line, as well as regional bragging rights, Fiorentina should have enough to overcome their old rivals.
