Peterborough star latest to be linked with Celtic move

Celtic’s January pursuit of attacking reinforcements could see the club look to an alternative target from League One after a move for Wolves star Leigh Griffiths stalled.

And one player currently being linked with a move to Parkhead is Peterborough’s Britt Assombalonga, with the forward catching the eye of many scouts following a standout start to his career with the Posh.

Signed from Watford for a club record fee, the young striker has notched up an impressive 10 goals in 19 appearances for Darren Ferguson’s club.

His ability to play both through the middle and on the wing could also tempt Neil Lennon into making a bid, should a move for Griffiths fail to materialise.

The Hoops boss has made no secret of his desire to recruit the Wolves man, who previously excelled during two loan spells with SPFL rivals Hibernian, but has also admitted that the club could yet look elsewhere.

“We are looking at other options as well,” he told reporters.

“I am not saying the deal is dead by any means but we do have other people in mind, not for that particular position but also for other positions.”

Peterborough would most likely hold out for a significant transfer fee but with a move to Celtic Park offering Assombalonga the opportunity to play in the Champions League at one of the biggest clubs in the UK it could prove too tempting to resist.

And the recruitment of the 21-year-old this month could certainly help Celtic’s chances in the Scottish Cup, with the Hoops currently 4/5 to claim the trophy this season.

The Bhoys certainly face a stern test in the last-16, with a tie against Aberdeen in the offing.

But whether it’s Griffiths, Assombalonga or another new goalscorer, the club should be well-stocked in the forwards department.
