Revealed -The striker Spurs must buy for Champions League push

| 22.01.2014

The race for the top four is hotting up and the January transfer window is the perfect opportunity for teams to solidify their chances with some new recruits.

Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood is obviously acutely aware of this fact and as he tries to nail down a place in the Champions League for next season, which is a 9/4 shot with Ladbrokes, he’s asked Franco Baldini to buy a British-based striker who is Premier League ready.

To help Mr Baldini with his search, we’ve come up with a four-strong shortlist that fit the bill, grading their suitability to the Tottenham cause. Do you agree?

Dimitar Berbatov – D

While seeing Berba back in a Spurs shirt will certainly be a romantic idea for many of the fans, his signing wouldn’t represent a long term strategy for the club.

His age and likely high wage demands mean that the Bulgarian shouldn’t be pursued, especially with far more youthful options available.

Rickie Lambert – C

Like Berbatov, Lambert isn’t a buy for the future at 31-years-old and a lack of experience in playing at the highest level leaves question marks over the shrewdness of buying him.

Again, there are also better options out there.

Javier Hernandez – B

Although perhaps the best player in this list, Hernandez wouldn’t have the most fluid of transitions into the Spurs side.

Unsuited to playing on his own up front, an injury to Adebayor would leave the club with two strikers, Soldado and Chicharito, who struggle when isolated up top.

Christian Benteke – A

The Aston Villa man is easily the most ready-made striker that Spurs can bring in for both an instant impact and a long-term asset.

Seeing as Sherwood has built his Spurs side around Emmanuel Adebayor, buying a player of Benteke’s physical stature means the Belgian would easily slot into life at White Hart Lane.
