Tottenham consider Premier League loan for Argentine outcast
Published:Tottenham Hotspur are weighing up the possibility of sending club record signing Erik Lamela out on loan to a fellow Premier League side for the remainder of the season, with Swansea City heading the list of potential destinations.
The Argentine has struggled to acclimatise to the demands of the English top flight following his £30m summer move from Serie A side Roma, scoring just one goal in 17 appearances for the north London club.
However it is believed that Spurs are not yet willing to cut their losses with the 21-year-old and could instead look to loan him out to another top flight side in a bid to give him the game time he needs.
It’s a strategy that has previously paid dividends, with England winger Andros Townsend now a mainstay of the Tottenham squad following a highly successful loan spell with strugglers Queens Park Rangers.
The Swans appear to be the ideal destination for the attacker, with Michael Laudrup’s continental brand of football sure to sit well with the sensibilities of a player that previously excelled in Italy.
Lamela may also favour the move, with increased playing time at Swansea likely to boost his chances of making Alejandro Sabella’s squad for the World Cup.
It could also help the Welsh club bolster its attacking options and continue their FA Cup campaign, with Swansea City 33/1 to win the trophy this season.
Spurs boss Tim Sherwood certainly appears eager to clear house at White Hart Lane with both Lewis Holtby and Etienne Capoue rumoured to be departing the club this January, as the Lilywhites gaffer continues to trim a bloated squad.
With Spurs already ruling out Lamela’s permanent departure, despite a lack of playing time, a loan could be the ideal solution, with a view to the Argentine starting afresh next term.
A streamlined squad of contented stars would then form a solid base from which Tottenham could continue their pursuit of a top four finish, something priced at 5/2 with Ladbrokes.
