Shell-shocked Arsenal slashed to endure February to forget

Arsenal’s bid for the Premier League title was left in serious jeopardy after their 5-1 mauling against an irresistible Liverpool at Anfield.

Given the fixture list in front of them, February was always going to be a defining month for Arsenal’s hunt for a first trophy in eight long seasons.

However, since it got off to a nightmarish start with that horror show on Merseyside, Ladbrokes have moved to slash the Gunners odds to lose all four of their crunch games in February from 20/1 to 12/1.

With their confidence not so much knocked as bulldozed, Arsenal now face a home Premier League game against Manchester United, before entertaining Liverpool in the FA Cup and then hosting Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Liverpool’s odds to make it a double over the Gunners within the space of eight days are labelled at 9/4, while Arsenal are deemed the 11/4 outsiders to win their first-leg last-16 encounter with Bayern.

Arsenal, are now deemed 6/1-shots to end up missing out on a top-four spot this season with 1/3 the price they fail to win a trophy.

Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: “Arsenal were well backed today but sadly for anyone who supported them they quickly knew their fate. The odds of their season continuing to unravel this month have shortened significantly as a result.”

Their fans will have to hope they bounce back quickly, and once again rely on their rock-solid defence when playing at home which have kept six straight clean sheets in all competitions.

At least they only have to wait four days to attempt to set the record straight when United visit midweek in the league.

Meanwhile, Raheem Sterling, one of Arsenal’s tormentors-in-chief during their drubbing against Liverpool remains a 6/4-shot to make England’s World Cup squad after his double.
