Del Potro can follow Stan’s and his own example to win U.S Open
Published:Stanislas Wawrinka became the first new Grand Slam winner since Juan Martin Del Potro won the US Open in 2009 and it might be time to invest in the burly Argentine winning at the highest level once more in New York.
The new Swiss number one broke a run of 16 Majors where the winner had come from the golden quartet of Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Roger Federer, almost as long as the stretch of 18 Grand Slams won by the monopoly that Del Potro interrupted when shocking the tennis world at Flushing Meadows over four years ago.
Del Potro’s career looked set to take off after coming from behind to beat Federer in that epic final five seasons ago, but a series of injuries have blunted his entry into the game’s VIP section.
However, the 25-year-old has shown when fit and healthy that he is still capable of playing at the highest level as seen last year when taking Djokovic to five sets in one of the greatest matches in history at the semi-final of Wimbledon.
The standard he reached there would have been good enough to win the vast majority of Major semi-finals and odds of 10/1 are worth taking on the popular right-hander lifting his second crown in the Big Apple.
Although Del Potro went out early at the recent Australian Open he showed he still knew where the winning line was when victorious at Sydney the week before, but often his campaign has taken off after the French Open.
The big man showed last year – despite going out early in New York – that his hardcourt game is in excellent shape with titles in Washington and Japan and a final run in Shanghai.
If Del Potro can stay fit and healthy he could be the next man to break the stranglehold and rejoin the only winners’ enclosure that really matters.
