Hodgson would be daft not to pick Liverpool’s ‘toughest’ player
Published:Liverpool’s skipper and talisman of the last decade, Steven Gerrard, would be widely perceived as the Reds toughest player to boot, if not the likes of towering defenders Mohamed Sakho or Martin Skrtel.
But according to Gerrard himself, the man he fears tangling with most in Liverpool training sessions is 5ft 7in Raheem Sterling.
The young winger has been a revelation for his club this season and especially in the last 10 games or so, flying down either flank frightening the living daylights out of full-baks and as such can now be backed at 6/4 to be included in England’s World Cup squad this summer.
“I don’t go near him in training because if I do, there is only one winner,” admitted Gerrard. “He’s the toughest in our squad. “Raheem has been in great form over the last couple of months and I’m sure Roy is watching him very closely,” Gerrard said.
“His form of late has been sensational and if he continues that until the end of the season, we will see him at the World Cup.”
When Roy Hodgson has finished endearing himself to the Brazilian public on his hearts and minds tour of England’s prospective World Cup venues, he would certainly do well to check in on Liverpool’s pocket dynamo.
Having dropped out of the first team picture for a prolonged period in the autumn Sterling, who only turned 19 in December, deserves enormous credit for fighting his way back into the frame, where he is now virtually undroppable.
Sterling’s mixture of motoring pace, trickery and tenacity has not only catapulted him back into the international reckoning, but his many attributes have helped turn Liverpool into title dark horses.
Just four points behind leaders Chelsea and with no cup distractions, Liverpool can be backed at 7/1 for the title.
