Liverpool should swerve Ajax ace in favour of Italy international

| 27.02.2014

Liverpool are sure to add to their number this summer after missing out on Yevhen Konoplyanka in January, but the latest name to be linked with the Reds would seem like money wasted.

The rumour doing the rounds is that Brendan Rodgers has sent scouts to Ajax with a view to snapping up their on-loan Barcelona forward, Bojan Krkic, for around £5m.

This seems a particularly strange choice given how rapidly the 23-year-old’s stock has dropped in recent seasons and especially because Liverpool have another bright young forward costing £11m in their ranks already.

Fabio Borini may have underwhelmed Reds fans in an injury-blighted first stint at Anfield, but fully fit and out on loan at Sunderland, the Italian has begun showing the qualities Rodgers was hoping for when signing him from Roma.

Five goals for the Black Cats, whom he has helped reach the Capital One Cup final, and many more impressive displays, should earn him another crack at the Anfield whip next season.

Liverpool’s 1/6-rated likeliness to get back into the Champions League this season means they should have a pretty good pick of the continent’s talent pool when drawing up the summer shopping list and this means aiming higher than Bojan.

Although labelled as a protégé when making his Barca debut aged 17 during the 2007/08 season, the club ended up selling Bojan to Roma in the summer of 2010, where he endured mixed fortunes before being loaned to AC Milan for the following campaign.

The Spaniard failed to make much of an impression at the San Siro either before Barca strangely opted to activate a buy-back clause written into the original Roma deal, before shipping him off on loan to Ajax.

Even in Holland though, KrKic has hardly torn up any trees, notching only twice in 19 appearances for the Dutch champions.
