Wildcats’ new recruits to showcase talents and end Bulls hoodoo

| 20.02.2014

New Wakefield Trinity Wildcats signing Jarrod Sammut will be eager to prove both to himself and to the rest of Super League that he made the right decision in leaving the crisis-hit Bradford Bulls.

The Wildcats are 1/4 to defeat their Yorkshire rivals on home turf with Bradford priced as the 3/1 outsiders and a draw available at odds of 20/1.

And although the visitors head into this contest having won their last four against Wakey, it’s difficult to support them on this occasion.

Australian half-back Sammut is just one of the many recent departures from Odsal that have weakened the four-time champions, with prop Garreth Carvell’s defection to Hull FC another bitter blow.

Wakefield, on the other hand, have lofty ambitions with the club assembling a squad packed full of quality as they bid to better their fifth-placed best ever finish in 2009.

Pita Godinet, Scott Anderson and Matt Ryan have been recruited from NRL sides New Zealand Warriors, Brisbane Broncos and Parramatta Eels respectively and this strength in depth should serve the hosts well this season.

And this first clash of the new campaign at the Rapid Solicitors Stadium is the perfect opportunity for the hosts to show they mean business.

Having trailed the big-spending Salford Red Devils 12-0 at half-time Richard Agar’s side rallied to a narrow 18-14 defeat on the opening day of the campaign.

Meanwhile, Bradford suffered a 36-18 reverse at home to Castleford Tigers and they’re unlikely to see a reversal of fortunes in round two.

Sammut is a 10/1 shot to make the dream start to his Wakefield career and score the first try of the game with full-back Brett Kearney the Bulls’ standout pick to cross the line first at 12/1.

Should the former of the pair duly oblige he’ll be in good company – Godinet and Ryan both scored on their first starts for the hosts with the former Eels player 10/3 to score a try at any time.
