Arsenal target set to stay in Spain with Espanyol

| 25.03.2014

Arsenal’s search for a new goalkeeper may not end with Kiko Casilla after the Spanish star committed his future to Espanyol.

The 27-year-old was thought to be prominent on Arsenal’s radar with Lukas Fabianski set to leave on a free transfer in the summer and doubts still remaining about Wojciech Szczesny’s long-term future at the club.

But if Casilla was Wenger’s man he will have been left frustrated by the former Spain Under-21 keeper’s desire to stay in La Liga.

“I have one year left of my contract and I always keep what I have signed,” Casilla tol El Mundo Deportivo.

“I do not know much about the renewal nor do I want to know until it is all done. My role is to be focused on the job and contribute my bit to the team. I insist that I will play here next year.”

Arsenal’s re-think over their goalkeepers has come following Szczesny’s performance in his side’s 6-0 drubbing at the hands of title rivals Chelsea.

The Pole was at fault for Oscar’s second goal at Stamford Bridge which came just a week after staff at the Emirates were left unimpressed with his selfie on the White Hart Lane pitch.

With the Polish international’s attitude under question and Fabianski ready to quit north London, Wenger has been looking to bolster his options between the sticks with Spanish duo Iker Casillas and Victor Valdes both also considered.

Before any decision is made the Gunners face a crucial run-in to the season as they chase FA Cup glory and bid to stay in the hunt for the title.

After defeat to Chelsea, Wenger’s men are out to 40/1 to win the title but their best hope of silverware lies in the oldest association football competition in the world.

Arsenal, who are 4/9 favourites with Ladbrokes, are set to face Wigan in the semi-final at Wembley on April 12th and should they come through that they would face either Sheffield United or Hull for the chance to lift the trophy.
