Wembley Stadium announced as venue for Froch-Groves rematch
Published:Wembley Stadium has been announced as the venue for the eagerly anticipated rematch between domestic rivals Carl Froch and George Groves with Ladbrokes claiming the fight looks set to break boxing betting records.
Froch climbed off the canvas to retain his WBA and IBF Super-Middleweight belts in the first fight after referee Howard Foster controversially stopped the bout in the ninth round.
Groves, who floored the champion in round one with a thunderous right hand, was ahead on all of the judges’ scorecards and claimed the fight was ended prematurely.
With the close nature of the first fight, the rivalry between the pair and the announcement of Wembley as the venue, the bookies anticipate this blockbuster of a contest could generate turnover past the million pound mark to never before seen levels in boxing.
Froch v Groves II looks set to eclipse the likes of Floyd Mayweather Jr v Ricky Hatton and David Haye’s clash with Nikolai Valuev for the record as the biggest fight in boxing betting history.
Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: “Everything looks set for this fight to smash boxing betting records. The venue coupled with their rivalry and the loyalty of their fan bases means that we expect it to be our busiest ever night.”
And if you think the pair cannot be split when they meet in the first fight to be held at Wembley since it was rebuilt in 2007, backing the draw at 25/1 could be the way to go.
But Saint George’s performance in the fight gave fight fans plenty to chew over in the aftermath of November’s clash and the 25-year-old is 7/2 to win either on points or by a knockout.
