Chelsea to offer PSG striker a Premier League escape route

Jose Mourinho’s ongoing pursuit of a world class striker to lead the line for Chelsea next season took a fresh twist today amid reports that one-time target Edinson Cavani will be considering his options come the summer.

The Uruguayan moved to Paris Saint-Germain for €64.5m last year, following a protracted transfer saga that saw a number of teams, including the Blues and Premier League rivals Manchester City, vying for his services.

But despite registering 21 goals in 33 appearances for the Parisiens, Cavani has been forced to play second fiddle to Zlatan Ibrahimovic, with manager Laurent Blanc preferred to play the big Swede through the middle, with the South American attacker out wide.

And speaking ahead of PSG’s Champions League meeting with Chelsea, Cavani hinted that next summer could see yet more upheaval for the Uruguayan.

“Will I remain at Paris next term? We will see at the end of the season,” he told reporters

“I am fine in Paris, but obviously there are things we have to talk about with the club, things we need to do in a different way.”

The comments will be music to the ears of Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, who has made no secret of his dissatisfaction with the strikers currently available to him.

And with Demba Ba and Samuel Eto’o expected to depart as part of a club clearout that could even see Fernando Torres leave on loan, Cavani could be a perfect fit for the Pensioners.

In the meantime Mourinho and Chelsea will be able to get a closer look at Cavani tonight, with the Uruguayan in action against the Blues.

The Londoners are 11/4 to claim a victory in Paris with PSG 11/10 favourites for the win and the draw available at 23/10. Cavani, meanwhile, is 7/4 to score a goal at any time during the match.
