Liverpool want Saints skipper aboard for European voyage

| 29.04.2014

Adam Lallana is almost certain to be part of England’s travelling party to Brazil, though far less clear is whether or not he’ll still be a Southampton player when the Premier League season kicks off in August.

The player recently named in the PFA team of the Season has been linked with many top clubs, but latest rumours indicate it’s Liverpool who are keenest to pursue their interests.

Liverpool have slipped back to 6/5 second favourites to win the title having flipped the initiative back over to Manchester City, although Champions League qualification means they’re still in major need of recruitment this summer come what may in the last few games.

And Southampton’s midfield maestro, still only 25, is exactly the sort of player that fits the bill for manager Brendan Rodgers.

It’s reported in one national paper that the Northern Irishman has earmarked Lallana to play in the hole behind his preferred partnership of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge next term.

The Saints skipper has all the requisite abilities to fulfil the role too, as he’s a player who thrives on the spaces between opposition midfield and defences.

As we’ve seen all season, Lallana can drive forward with the ball at pace, can use both feet to manoeuvre out of tight situations and has the guile to seek out a killer pass.

In many respects he is similar to Philippe Coutinho who’s already on the Anfield books, though with the strains of European football back on the Liverpool squad, ready-made reinforcements in every area will be key to success.

It’s clearly not the news Southampton fans wanted to hear, as their club’s successes on the pitch this season were bound to act as catalyst for unwanted attention on their top players.

The club have insisted they will avoid a fire sale of their best talent, but it will be easier said than done.
