Manchester United midfield target shines again in Serie A

Published:

Manchester United were given another glimpse of what they were missing last weekend as Torino midfielder Alessio Cerci capped an impressive performance for the Serie A side with a goal in a 2-1 win over Genoa.

The Red Devils were reportedly considering a January move for the former Roma and Fiorentina midfielder, who has impressed with the Turin club this term.

Liverpool were also thought to be mulling over a bid for the player, whose fine form has prompted Italy national team manager Cesare Prandelli to bring the attacker back into the Azzurri fold.

However, the Premier League pair ultimately opted against a mid-season move for the midfielder, though given that the impressive displays have continued, that could well change come the summer and the reopening of the transfer window.

The 26-year-old has managed 13 goals in 33 appearances for the Italian side, including Sunday’s stoppage-time winner, which left the team just five points off a Europa League qualification space.

Manchester United remain in the mix for European football next term, but with Everton occupying fourth and the Red Devils some nine points off the Toffees, a Champions League berth looks unlikely.

David Moyes’ team may instead earn a place in the Europa League with the Manchester club currently three points off Tottenham in sixth – potentially the last European qualification space available.

Failure to land Champions League football is likely to put a number of big name stars off a move to Old Trafford, however Cerci could well be more open to the idea of moving to United.

The midfielder was previously happy to take a step down to join Torino from Fiorentina and given the level of prestige surrounding Manchester United, any contract offer is likely to be too tempting to resist.

However, with Liverpool likely to have another look at the player over the summer, Moyes and co could face stiff competition off the pitch as well as on it.

Manchester United are next in action against Everton in the Premier League, with the Reds 15/8 for a win at Goodison Park, while a draw is on at 12/5 and a Toffees victory can be backed at 11/8.
