Kiwi duo boost Worcestershire’s bid for T20 success
Published:At 33/1 Worcestershire may not be everyone’s first pick for T20 Blast glory but with international stars Saeed Ajmal, Colin Munro and Mitch McClenaghan all available at different times during the campaign they have to be considered as live outsiders for glory.
The county have been tipped to struggle by many but having already recruited the leading wicket taker in T20 internationals, Steve Rhodes’ side moved quickly to sign New Zealand international Colin Munro as their second overseas player.
The 27-year-old hard hitting left-hander has plenty of T20 experience having been part of New Zealand’s squad for the World Twenty20 and with a strike rate of just over 133 he will be a useful addition to the squad.
And with 194 runs from 149 balls at international level so far he will strengthen a batting line-up already featuring England international Moeen Ali.
Worcestershire have also announced the signing of McClenaghan as a replacement for when Ajmal heads to the West Indies to play in the Caribbean Premier League.
The Kiwi fast bowler will play in all three formats of the game for the New Road outfit and will try to boost the county’s bid to reach T20 finals day for the first time in the 11-year history of the competition.
The 27-year-old enjoyed a successful spell with Lancashire last summer and was expected to head back to Old Trafford for the new season.
But Worcestershire pulled of a coup by bringing the left-arm quick, who took 11 wickets in three ICC Champions Trophy matches in England last summer, back to the English county game and Director of Cricket Rhodes is delighted with the club’s acquisitions.
“Both Colin and Mitch played in the ICC World Twenty20 last month and have real match-winning pedigree,” said Rhodes.
Alongside Ajmal, who has 195 T20 wickets at an average of 16, the Kiwi duo could help turn Worcestershire into genuine contenders for T20 Blast glory at 33/1 with Ladbrokes.
