Spurs must land Real Madrid and Man City men in Levy’s new plan
Published:His latest comments may sound like a fanfare of triumph to Tottenham fans while the rest of the world hears the tune of common sense, but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has learnt a valuable lesson this season.
Talking about plans for the coming summer transfer window, the penny seems to have dropped with Levy that going out and spending cash like the most prolific LA socialite wasn’t the best strategy in replacing Gareth Bale.
He said: “We shall not look to a summer of major upheaval, but rather to strengthen in key positions.”
All devoted Lilywhite followers must now cross their fingers that the bespectacled bargain-hunter correctly identifies those key positions with whoever is in charge.
What must have bemused most onlookers this term was Tottenham’s decision to challenge for a top-four spot, which is now a 40/1 longshot, with only three full-backs, two of whom were the less-than-heralded Kyle Naughton and Danny Rose.
Signing quality players to flank two centre-halves is a must for Spurs this summer and Real Madrid’s Fabio Coentrao is an obvious, if sought after, starting point.
The Portuguese left-back has been on the sidelines at the Bernabeu for much of the campaign and will be a significant upgrade on Rose or the forgotten Benoit Assou-Ekotto.
Kyle Walker’s presence at right-back makes that position less of a worry but a recruit who can provide adequate competition to the Sheffield lad should also be a priority for Spurs, who are 1/2 to finish in the top six, this summer.
Man City’s Micah Richards is, like Coentrao, sure to be available this summer having failed to nail down a starting spot on Manuel Pellegrini’s right flank and would certainly challenge Walker’s dominance on the number two shirt.
