Tottenham turn to Juventus outcast for Premier League goals

Tottenham are rumoured to be lining up a bid for Juventus cast-off Mirko Vucinic amid reports that Greek giants Olympiakos are keen on the Montenegrin hitman.

The 30-year-old was previously linked with a January move to Arsenal after falling down the pecking order at the Serie A club.

But with the Gunners’ interest in the striker seemingly cooling, Tottenham could be the ones to benefit with Vucinic likely to be available for a cut-price fee following a stop-start season with the Bianconeri.

Adept at playing as either a lone frontman or in a wide supportive role, the Montenegrin enjoyed arguably his best form with previous club AS Roma, hitting double figures for goals in three consecutive seasons before Juve paid €15m to prise him away from their Serie A rivals.

Steady returns of 10 and 14 goals in his first two seasons with the club were impressive enough but the summer recruitment of Carlos Tevez and Fernando Llorente have seen his first-team opportunities greatly reduced.

Vucinic has so far made just 11 domestic appearances, scoring two goals along the way and was nearly sold to Inter Milan as part of a swap deal involving Fredy Guarin, before fan protests prompted the latter club to veto the move.

The one-time Lecce forward looks set to depart the Juventus Stadium this summer though and while Olympiakos have already expressed an interest in landing the striker, Vucinic is likely to favour any offer from the Premier League and a club of Tottenham’s calibre.

Spurs could opt to move for Vucinic as a backup to Roberto Soldado who has endured a miserable first season in the Premier League but could yet be given another campaign to regain the kind of form that made him hot property in Spain.

Aside from Emanuel Adebayor, Tottenham currently lack an effective goal threat and the Montenegrin’s pedigree, coupled with his positional versatility, could make him the ideal budget recruitment.

Spurs are in action away at Stoke this weekend with Tim Sherwood’s side 13/10 to win at the Britannia.
