Nothing won yet for Liverpool skipper Gerrard despite favouritism

| 14.04.2014

On an emotional day at Anfield, the sight of Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard crying with relief at the final whistle was the enduring image in the wake of his side’s vital win over Manchester City.

Despite there still being four games left to play in this incredible Premier League season, the very fact that the Reds now have their title destiny in their own hands, was clearly too much for Liverpool’s captain fantastic to handle.

Although Gerrard’s ultimate desire has become that much more tangible, nothing, as the Reds legend himself pointed out afterwards, is yet done and dusted, especially with second-placed Chelsea the next visitors to Anfield.

“We have won nothing yet. Exactly the same next week [at Norwich City]. We go again,” said Gerrard.

But that hasn’t stopped the one-club man shooting to the top of the betting to be crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2014.

Despite the very real possibility Liverpool could still be pipped to the title, punters are offered 2/1 on Gerrard following in the footsteps of former teammate and 1998 SPOTY winner Michael Owen.

Gerro would no doubt prove a popular winner, if Liverpool did go on to claim that hard-to-pin-down title, but he’d also have to become only the second footballer to claim the prize in the last 13 years.

There are plenty of others in the market who have strong claims at this time, not least Lewis Hamilton who is favourite to lift this year’s drivers’ Formula One world title.

Having been jilted into second in the final SPOTY standings by Olympic cyclist Sir Chris Hoy the first time he won the F1 crown back in 2008, the British driver would be sure to run anyone close at 4/1.

Meanwhile, with three golf majors still up for grabs in 2014, a resurgent Rory McIlroy shouldn’t be discounted either at 12/1.
