Never fear though, because we’ve picked out four of the best moments of World Cups passed for you to reminisce over in the meantime.
Robson’s fast start
Captain Marvel did his best to set the tone of England’s 1982 World Cup campaign in Spain, scoring after just 27 seconds of their opening group game against France.
Long before Rory Delap copyrighted the ploy, Steve Coppell launched a long-throw into the French box, Terry Butcher flicked it on and Robson swept it home.
Hardly the most beautiful goal in World Cup history, but the quickest until Davor Sukor came along in 2002.
Owen’s solo effort
In the same game that David Beckham’s career reached its lowest point, Michael Owen arguably experienced his euphoric high.
Beckham’s revenge
Four years after his famous red card, Beckham was skippering England in the 2002 World Cup.
When Owen earned the side a penalty against Argentina a minute before the break in the second group game, Beckham stepped up with the chance to put England ahead.
After firing the ball home, Beckham let the emotion pour out as he celebrated what was to be the winning strike and his own personal redemption.
Platt v Belgium
The closest England have come to touching the World Cup trophy since 1966 was the fourth place they achieved in 1990.
Although Gary Lineker’s attempts to make the nation look good at penalties against Cameroon runs it close, David Platt’s sweet swivel finish in extra time of the round-of-16 clash against Belgium takes the biscuit.
